Simon Named to Final Big East Honor Roll Award List

Jamaica, NY— Coming off of a week that included 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists, redshirt sophomore Justin Simon has been named to the final Big East Weekly Honor Roll of the 2017-18 season, as it was announced by the conference office.

A victory that closed out the regular season, showed that Justin Simon is the next big player to don the red and blue. The sophomore from California shot 50% on the week, also had 4.0 steals per game. Simon also played in every single second of the previous two contests against Butler and Providence. Playing in 90 minutes was due to teammate Shamorie Ponds being listed as injured and inactive against the Friars in Rhode Island.

This past Wednesday featured Justin Simon tying the game up in the final seconds of regulation and sending the Red Storm into overtime. He scored nine of his game-high 24 points both overtime periods, in which lifted his squad to a 75-68 victory at Carnesecca Arena.

FACT FROM SJU MEDIA GUIDE: Simon becomes the first Red Storm player since Malik Boothe in 2010 to record 50 or minutes in a single contest.

Against the Providence Friars at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Simon put the Johnnies on his back and carried the Red Storm to a three point deficit after being down by as much as 13 at the half-way mark of the contest. Simon’s efforts were not unnoticed, but not enough as St. John’s fell to Ed Cooley’s Friars 61-57.

Justin Simon, Shamorie Ponds, and Marvin Clark II will begin as the #9 seed and battle Patrick Ewing and #8 Georgetown Hoyas for the third time this season on Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00pm. The game can be heard on WSJU St. John’s University Radio Network with Joey Jarzynka, Michael Slavit, and Brendan Myers on the call beginning at 6:30pm.
